Edward is the programme chair for the Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science in Republic Polytechnic. He has been working alongside his team of sport science lecturers to ensure that graduates from the Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science are equipped and relevant to the sports industry. Many of his students and alumni are also national athletes who have recently represented Singapore in the 30th SEA Games 2019 and achieved commendable results. Apart from ensuring rigour in the diploma programme, Edward actively supports his students and student athletes through RP’s student support framework to ensure that they get the best support in their academic and sporting pursuits. Having taken part in numerous multisport and adventure racing in his younger days, Edward can attest to the joys and struggles of managing both studies and sports at the same time.
“It’s Tough Being a Student athlete” Strategies / programmes to help students manage student life.
A case study on the impact of Republic Polytechnic’s student life initiatives for student athletes. Ensuring the sporting and academic success of student athletes is both challenging and complex. When not managed well, one or both may suffer. It is therefore important for educational institutions to invest resources into strategies and programmes to manage student life. Beyond just good time management by a student athlete, a robust coaching framework and delivering quality academic programmes through dedicated lecturers, more can be done to help our student athletes realise their potential, avoid burnout and achieve success.
